Celebrating 100 years of St.Mark's Church, Purley |
Rev. Frany Long of St. Mark’s Church Church Road Purley says... St. Mark’s Church was built to replace the old iron church as a place of worship for the fast growing community of Woodcote. It was consecrated in November 1910. The parish has certainly changed over the years but this beautiful church remains relatively unchanged by the passing of time. St. Mark’s has always had a strong music tradition and so I am very pleased that one of the main events during our centenary year will be a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, sung by the English Arts Chorale, on the evening of the 27th March, the Saturday before Palm Sunday. The concert will be candle-lit and as much an act of devotion as a performance, as we experience the true depth of the passion surrounding the Cross through the beauty and emotion of Bach’s music in a place of committed prayer and witness. The wide nave and dramatic chancel of St. Mark’s provide the ideal venue for an intimate performance of Bach’s greatest sacred work. Ticket information is here |
