The English Arts Chorale
at St Paul's Church, Dorking

This is The English Arts Chorale's first visit to St Paul's Church in Dorking - a church that has been re-ordered to allow flexibility in worship, which makes it an excellent concert venue.

The English Arts Chorale will sing the Requiems by Brahms and Durufle on this occasion in the composers' versions for keyboard. Brahms wrote two versions for four hands on either one or two pianos, and in this concert there will be four hands on one piano - which brings particular challenges to the pianists and a different dimension to the work, with particular clarity of choral sound.

Maurice Durufle was working on a suite of organ pieces based on plainsong from the Mass for the Dead when he received the commision for the Requiem. Thus plainsong became the basis for the new work, but overlaid and woven around with sensuous harmonies, then building into a dramatic climax before ending with a final movement of wonderful spiritual tranquillity. In this concert The English Arts Chorale will be accompanied by Ian le Grice on the organ.
